Crossbearing Theotokos

This form of icon is attributed to Mother Mary of Paris, having stitched a form of it while in Ravensbrück concentration during World War Two. She was murdered in a gas chamber on Holy Saturday of 1945. This form of icon was carried forth in the memory of a fellow prisoner which is how made its way to us. 

The Crossbearing Theotokos is many things, including a meditation on the unique ways we all bear the cross of Christ. For the Theotokos, part of bearing her cross was mother God—a task which would pierce her soul. 

This icon in particular is done with ephermal inclination—as though it were sidewalk chalk art.
