This icon, commonly called Christ Pantocrator of Sinai, can be found in St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, Egypt. Written in the 5th or 6th century, and having survived the Iconoclast disputes of the 8th and 9th centuries, it is one of the oldest icons in existence.
While simple internet research can provide bountiful explanations of this icon—a few questions to aid one in reading this icon for themselves would begin with:
- What are his hands doing?
- Where are his eyes looking?
- What is in the background and why?
- What moment might this be depicting?
- What are the two sides of his face displaying?
- What do the colors of the icon evoke?
The framing of this icon is stunning. High quality canvas is set off by a frame of natural wood. Featured here is dark brown finish though black or natural are availble at request.
